Powerwall 3 compatibility with existing Powerwall 2 systems

Tesla now supports eligible mixed Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 systems, subject to software, gateway, capacity and installer requirements.

Powerwall 3 compatibility with existing Powerwall 2 systems

Tesla now supports eligible Powerwall 3 additions to existing Powerwall 2 systems through a software update. The current Australian support guidance requires software version 26.26 or later.

Eligible does the work in that sentence. Gateway generation, metering, system size, phase arrangement, equipment approval and site condition all bear on whether a property qualifies, and each should be checked before an upgrade is quoted. Compatibility is not automatic.

Mixed systems carry fixed unit limits

Tesla's current maximum configuration:

These are ceilings, not a design. Battery capacity still has to be assessed against consumption, solar generation, backup loads, connection limits and the intended operating mode for the site in question.

An expired Powerwall 2 listing does not disqualify the site

Tesla states that an existing Powerwall 2 can remain in a mixed system even where its product listing has expired. The newly installed Powerwall 3 must hold the current Clean Energy Council approval required at the time of installation.

The concession covers the listing only. Electrical condition, firmware, metering, gateway compatibility and network settings remain part of the upgrade scope, so the existing installation still gets assessed.

Three-phase sites take a 5 kW output cap

For a Powerwall 3 installed on a three-phase site under this compatibility pathway, Tesla limits Powerwall 3 output to 5 kW. That constraint belongs in the load, backup and connection assessment before system selection, not after it.

Gateway 1 and the Neurio Meter are not supported

Tesla identifies two items as unsupported for this mixed configuration:

  • Gateway 1
  • Neurio Meter

The gateway and metering arrangement should be recorded during the initial site assessment, because unsupported equipment can change the viable scope and cost of an upgrade.

The work sits with a Tesla Certified Installer

Tesla requires the work to be completed by a Tesla Certified Installer. The installer should:

  1. confirm the existing Powerwall, gateway and meter models
  2. verify the required software version
  3. assess the electrical installation and network connection
  4. confirm the proposed unit count and phase arrangement
  5. use the current Tesla installation and commissioning documentation
  6. test the completed system and retain the required handover records
